A Green party councillor has called for railways to be re-nationalised and all lines in the North West to be electrified.

Lancaster City councillor Chris Coates, who also demanded the Government protect the West Coast main line from flooding, said: “We need real investment in local rail services to bring them up to modern European standards, not just protecting short stretches from flooding.

We want to see the railways taken back into public ownership.”
