Eranet News on January 23th, 2014. As Wall Street Journal reported, BlackBerry is selling the majority of its Canadian real estate holdings in a bid to shore up its cash position and further shrink its sprawling, money-losing operations, as it struggles to refocus the business on its enterprise base.
Though BlackBerry downplayed its significance, the move raises questions about whether the Waterloo, Ontario-based company will continue to call Canada its home turf. Most of BlackBerry's Canadian real-estate holdings are in Waterloo, though it also has offices in Toronto and other parts of Ontario."BlackBerry remains committed to being headquartered in Waterloo and having a strong presence in Canada along with other global hubs," BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said in a statement. "This initiative will further enhance BlackBerry's financial flexibility, and will provide additional resources to support our operations as our business continues to evolve."BlackBerry declined to comment on the potential value of the sale. The company posted a fiscal third-quarter loss of $4.4 billion on charges and a sharp drop in revenue.
