When architect Manuelle Schelp of Studio Schelp first visited new clients in Mosman, she found an old 1920s house, hunched and dominating the front of the block, peering over the street below.
While its positioning allowed for a good sized backyard, it wasn't a particularly inviting or much used space. And importantly, perched as it was, it denied the house and occupants its full potential for views - north-east over Balmoral Beach to Middle Harbour.
Schelp's brief was to design a new home for her clients, accommodating visiting children and grandchildren, and to open every room to a view.
Ensuring the correct siting was the first imperative. Instinctively, Schelp designed a house that pulled back from the street to most effectively open up to the horizon. In doing so, she was able to create outdoor rooms at both the front and rear of the house, directly connect most indoor and outdoor spaces, maximise cross-ventilation and light, and afford every room except one a gorgeous view.
AdvertisementWorking with a site that rose steeply from the street, Schelp stepped the house over 3½ levels spread across two separate pavilions married by a courtyard.
The first pavilion was designed to house all living/dining spaces and kitchen, family room, two bathrooms and bedrooms.
Defining it, a curving C-shaped cantilevered balcony, extending its hand to the north-east and street in response to the shape of the block. Fully retractable, full-height doors opened living and dining areas to the balcony and view.
Tucked a half-level above this is the private second pavilion, used to house the owner's main bedroom and bathroom, and offering both direct access to a rear garden and views above the front pavilion out to sea.
With a busy public walkway running along the northern length of the block, and being mindful of views from neighbouring properties and the street below, Schelp consciously used flat roofs on both pavilions as ''fifth and sixth building facades''.
Both are designed to be functional, aesthetically pleasing and integrated into their environment.
The roofs are covered with pebbles, and borders of upturned concrete are used on both, with landscaping featuring on the front pavilion.
Schelp, with builder Sean Coddington of Coddington Constructions, used a simple palette of materials designed to create calm, ordered spaces.
Internally, they used blackbutt floors and white walls. Externally, travertine, exposed face blockwork at ground level and smooth render on upper levels.
The result is a new house much more effectively connected to its world.
