  •           It was just announced by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) that on June 12, 2012, they will be performing a system upgrade to the .CA registry. This upgrade, known as a “middleware implementation” will make it easier for domain registrars such as GoDaddy and Network Solutions to work with CIRA, they say. In order to successfully complete the upgrade, there will be a 24 hour service outage from 9:00 a.m. (ET) on June 12 to 9:00 a.m. (ET) on June 13.

    .CA Domains Outage

The following registrant transactions will be impacted during the service outage, in other words you will not be able to make updates at your domain registrar on all .CA domains during the 24 hour period blackout. It seems that the entire domain registration/management lifecycle of the Canadian ccTLD domain names will come to a halt.

    • Registrants will not be able to submit new .CA domain registrations during the service outage.
    • Registrants will not be able to approve their CIRA Registrant Agreement during the service outage.
    • Registrants will not be able to update or renew existing .CA domain names during the service outage.
    • Registrants who are .CA Members will not be able to access the Member website during the service outage.
    • CIRA’s Election website (CIRAElections.ca) will be offline during the service outage.

Other impacts that the outage will have include: domain names in the “Add Grace Period” and the “Redemption Grace Period” scheduled to expire during the service outage will be extended by 24 hours automatically. The To Be Released (TBR) list will not be accessible during the service outage. Finally, WHOIS data will not be accessible during the service outage.

CIRA expects their systems to be 100% ready for action at 9:00 a.m. (ET) on June 13, 2012. CIRA has carefully mapped out the time required to perform the registry upgrade, and developed a schedule that provides a balance between expediency with quality control.  Exactly 24 hours affords CIRA the appropriate amount time to perform the necessary steps in the upgrade and help ensure that middleware implementation is a success.
