People misspell stuff. It’s human nature to err. This premise is the reason lots of people buy and have bought typo domain names over the years. Some misspelled domain names get a lot of traffic because the words and websites they represent are so popular and oft-searched for by regular web users.

However, todaynic find it interesting to see people intentionally use the misspelling of a word for the domain name to build their website on. I am biased as dnxpert.com is a misspelling of dnexpert (which I also own, after acquiring it some 2 years after launching dnxpert.com).

Here is a list of popular websites intentionally built on misspellings of words – most probably because the proper spelling was not available or was too expensive to acquire at the time their websites were launched. All the sites mentioned below are within the top 500 most visited websites in the world according to alexa.com.

    dribbble.com
Dribbble is show and tell for creatives. Designers, developers and other creatives share shots – small screenshots of the designs and applications they are working on.

    flickr.com
Flickr is considered by many as the best online photo management and sharing application in the world. The site lets you show off your favorite photos and videos to the world, securely and privately show content to your friends and family, or blog the photos and videos you take with a cameraphone.

    digg.com
Allows community rating of news, videos and pictures on the web. Breaking news on technology, politics, entertainment, and more… Reached its peak in the years gone by in my opinion, but people still use it.

    tumblr.com
Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, phone, desktop, email, or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors, to your theme’s HTML.

    corkd.com
Cork’d paved a new way to review, share & discuss wine. It was a great site, but it appears it got shut down – not sure why…

    vimeo.com
Vimeo is a community of creative people who are passionate about sharing the videos they make. They provide lots of tools and high quality video.

    scribd.com
Scribd is a social publishing site, where tens of millions of people share original writings and documents. Scribd’s vision is “to liberate the written word”.

    fiverr.com
Fiverr.com is a place for people to share things they’re willing to do for $5.

    flippa.com
Flippa is Sitepoint’s marketplace for buying and selling websites.

    adf.ly

Adf.ly is a URL shortening service that pays – it lets you earn money for each visitor to your shortened links. It’s a domain hack – still a misspelling (ok I kinda cheated with this one :) ).

I had fun putting the list together. I hope you had fun reading it.
